Thanks for a great website. I am especially interested in any information I can get about the Civil War in western Missouri. Nearly all of my father's family were early settlers in this region. Some were the first to put the plow to the prairie, in Cass Co., and I believe were displaced by Order No. 11. On the page about the Lone Jack Massacre it is stated that the Kansas "Redlegs" became the 9th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. I would like to know more about this connection. What info did the author base this on? Thanks again. Mike Shaw

Hey - was just googling over the de-oxidizing effects of citric acid on avocados & guac and hit your recipe. Then I began wandering your irresistably attractive site. I used to cook a lot when I was younger and had a son in the house, and your unpretentious recipes and astute commentaries might just lure this bachelor out of the restaurants and back into the kitchen again. I sent the url to my family and we all laughed and commented about your pets, their names and the recipes. You have such a variety of topics of interest on the site and it shows in the comments that people leave for you. I also congratulate you on the unique page design. We are from Chile and after lots of moving around, we are in the USA. We enjoyed the site as it shows hints of Chilean culture. No matter what we do and no matter where we live, the Chilean background is always there, so identifiable.

Hi, I just came upon your lovely pictures of Algorta. I am hoping to go to Spain next year (early May 2004)and visit my grandfather's birth place-a small fishing village (El Anchovy) outside of Algorta. I have never been to Spain and this would be a wonderful trip honouring my father's people. Yours is the first site I have come across that mentions Algorta. All the others talk about the larger cities and sites. Could you tell me please if there are any bed and breakfasts in Algorta? My husband and I are on a limited budget and will be making this trip after a pilgrimmage to Haifa, Israel. We are travelling from the Yukon in Canada to Israel and then back again. We are hoping to take 3-4 days to go to Spain if we can plan an economical visit. I would be grateful if you have any tips for us. Thanks so much. Lynn Echevarria November 17, 2003.

Subject: Why do you rant against metric?
I suggest you re-read carefully your "explanation" of why metric is more complicated in the kitchen. You only succeeded in convincing me that the U.S. system is way too complicated. The main problem is that there are way too many units for the same thing, and they're not decimal multiples of each other. Just for volumes, we have cubic inches, cubic feet, cups, pints, quarts, teaspoons, tablespoons, gallons, fluid ounces... Do you know how many oz. there are in a quart off the top of your head? Two out of three college-educated people I asked didn't. You should try metric for a change. Get European recipe books and a Euro-measuring cup (Ikea is a good source for this kind of stuff) and see for yourself.

Just read your recent opinion of the shopping clerk strikes. Most insightful. What are your thoughts re the comatose FL woman? I'm not supportive of a death sentence against someone who committed no crime. Even if I was, the method of execution is barbaric. Hitler's death camp commandants sent priests and rabbis to death via starvation. A horrid end, comatose or not. Imagine a southerner killing a dog that way. It would be all over NPR and the alphabet networks. So much for compassionate liberal judges.

Subject: well I can see you are from Chile but let me tell you something about PISCO if you don't know

My husband is an auto enthusiast and has been excited about the Mini Cooper S since he first read about it. We are the very happy drivers of a BMW 540 6 speed and will be buying a Mini Cooper S. I read your review, and being that you are in San Diego, was hoping you may have some suggestions on purchasing one. Time is not a factor being that there are some good options coming out in future models. My husband drove one last weekend and we went today to Brecht BMW today and I drove one. We both were very pleased with the handling and and got a feel for how fun the car will be (and after driving the 540, it is hard to find cars that can compare other than a BMW. By the way, the 540 has reverse in the same position and I have forgotten how strange that is.) Well, the problem is that we had a check for $25,000 with us to buy the car we want, but they want $28,075. Money is really not an issue except that they seem to be gauging a bit too much (I can understand a bit of a bite since they are in demand). Also they are adding Lo-jack and that protective coating (which my husband hates as he feels can be a problem in the future, and in his case is not necessary as he really takes great care of his cars inside and out.) and charging a pretty penny for something we don't even want. So I guess I need to know if you know of any options, like going to LA to buy, or are we going to have to get reemed since we ARE going to buy the car? I know this was long winded but when you want something...well you know how it is! Thank you Donna Balmat-Jantz

Subject: San Diego History
Your description of Indians of San Diego County shows how very, very, uninformed you are. It also shows that while you may travel, you obviously have not been to local museums that display Indian made pottery, which you say Indians of California never made. How you can call what you wrote "history text" is beyond me - maybe you should really study the history of California Indians and San Diego Indians before you pretend to know what you are talking about.

Rick's reponse:
I don't claim to be a scholar or historian, but I am interested in the promotion of history in place of romantic myths. My source for much of my information is "History of California" by the great historian Hubert Howe Bancroft, who researched the Spanish chronicles in Cadiz. It turns out that later accounts revealed that the some Kumeyaay women were indeed quite advanced in pottery-making. I have visited the local museums and seen some of this art, but these pieces were post-conquest. However, some more modern historians believe that the art goes back 1,300 years, so I have made the correction on the history page.
By the way, if you are so much better informed than I, you should have the confidence to identify yourself, or you could have sent me a private email rather than post anonymously in our guest book.

Although it is your family history in some ways we might be linked- but thanks alot for the headstart on my search. It was real educational! Best of wishes Erazo's from the Erazo's! Subject: Apaches
I got to your site from a search on Apaches that I was doing. I found your footnote rude and insensitive. It is written from a very "white" point of view, and doesn't seem to be particularly sensitive even to "mestizo" soldiers... I wonder who you think you are, perhaps superior to lots of people. So I thought I would share that with you. Sincerely, Mia Kalish

Rick's reponse:
I'm sorry you were offended by my footnote on the Apache Indians. While I take objection to your charge that I was rude (intentionally meaning to offend), I can't deny that I may have been insensitive, since it is impossible to repeat historical accounts without offending someone.
I admit that a fair treatment of Apache history requires much more than a brief footnote. I only mentioned them because it was necessary to point out that the conquering Spaniards did not view all bands they encountered equally;  that some were more pacific than others; that some were more primitive (by Spanish standards); and some more warrior-like. The Apaches (at least the Mimbreños and Chiricahuas that they encountered) were particularly troublesome -- so much so that the mestizo soldiers (who were probably related to other tribes that were displaced by Apaches invading from the Plains) refused to battle with them. The Yuma Indians, for example, considered the Apaches barbaric invaders from the Plains (though the Apaches themselves may have been displaced by the Comanches and Utes).
As to their grooming habits, I found it interesting that the Spanish, who were themselves not particularly hygienic by today's standards, recorded that the Apaches they encountered were "cochino y fétido" (filthy and malodorous). Of course this is a "white" point of view, but what would our view be of a dragoon or even a Forty-Niner if we encountered one today?

My little sister with the same last name of Erazo was smuggled into the United States in a truck carrying lava lamps. Once she crossed the border I believe she then was forced to give out samples of salsa (on corn chips) at the Costco up in Sgt. Bluff Idaho. I am looking to be reunited with her and was looking on the internet with other people who have the same last name. Please help me find her. I have had a spiritual awakening and need to reconcile my feelings and put the past behind me. I am no longer mad at her for telling me I look funny in the shorts I bought on my 20th birthday. Love the recipe for the Beer Butt Chicken. Have you tried it with Kool Aid? I heard it brings out the natural flavors.

(heck I loved everything about your website) Too many web sites just reprint the same old dusty bancroft type texts with all the errors left in. I didn't see Fio's on your guide to places to eat. I'm guessing you don't want it full up on the night we go.

comments: Hi! Am a friend of Cristian and Stacy. Just stopped by to check out your site. Very informative... Under your sites to be seen in Viriginia you have Meadow Lake park listed a few miles up Rt 7... Actually, it's Meadow Lark Park-- 75 acres of rolling Virginia countryside with gardens and ponds. $3 adults admisson -- Worth a visit. The Bride and Groom might consider this place on their pictoral visits on their wedding day! Many folks do! See you at the wedding!

We found that armadillo road kill wasn't easy to come by in these parts so we substituted raccoon. We also added a 3rd six pack of beer and a bottle of baccardi rum. By the time we finished the recipe, we couldn't even stand up straight much less tast this fine culinary delight! But it was a really fun evening! I think I'll refrain from your recipes!!!!!!!!!

comments: I love it! I want a home site too! I can't wait to see the family pictures you scan in. Be sure to include wedding pics to I can check out the dress you finally bought (or had made), Carol! Rick, how about adding a favorite recipe page? You could share all those wonderful dishes you whip up in the kitchen. "Chef Rick". Has a nice ring, doesn't it?
I miss you both. I know I checked "Friend" in the drop box, but I feel more like family.
Love you both. Judy
