Family Canidae
Guinness Name: Guinness
Breed: Flat-Coated Retriever
Owners: Chris and Karina
Origin: Humane Society of Fairfax County, Va.
Guinness started out as Rick's running companion in West Springfield, Virginia in 1987. She became attached to Chris Segal, and he adopted her in 1991. She was his companion (and later Karina's too) for 13 more years.
Simple Name: Simple (1996-1999)
Breed: American Foxhound
Owners: Cristian and Stacy
Origin: Fluvanna SPCA (a chapter in Central Virginia that rescues field hounds).
Simple was a very intelligent and lovable dog, but suffered from severe allergies and other genetic complications apparently related to the poor breeding practices of field hound breeders, and was euthanized at a very young age.
Sheesha Name: Sheesha (1986-2000)
Breed: Staffordshire Terrier Mix
Owner: Chris Erazo (1952-2001)
Origin: SICSA, Kettering, OH.
Sheesha was Chris' companion for the last 14 years of his life. Friendly and playful, she took her guardian duties seriously.
Bianca Name: Bianca (1980?-1996)
Breed: Bichon Frise
Owners: Rick and Carol
Origin: Washington Animal Rescue League, Washington, D.C.,who reported that she was rescued from the Iranian embassy, abandoned during the Iranian hostage crisis when Iranian diplomats were declared persona non grata and expelled. She had red painted nails and was called "Bijou." She was extremely shy but became Carol's devoted companion.
wpe4.jpg (3176 bytes) Name: Maniac (1986-??)
Breed: Border Collie Mix
Owners: VP-9/VP-48
Origin: Maniac was rescued as a puppy near a dumpster in Adak, Alaska, as he was being eyed by some bald eagles. The Navy patrol squadron airmen who worked on the line raised him in the line shack and he became the squadron mascot. At the end of the deployment, he was brought back to Moffett Field on the airlift and we kept him in our quarters on base. He was later abducted by a discharged airman and is believed to have spent the rest of his life in Albuquerque, NM..
wpe4.jpg (3176 bytes) Name: Sunnyvale's Sonntag Max (1974-??)
Breed: Doberman Pinscher
Owners: Rick and Carol
Origin: Sunnyvale Kennel, Foley, AL.
Max is the first and last dog we ever bought from a breeder. He was a great dog, but overly protective of Karina and Cristian, who were very young, and we decided to let him be adopted by a single sight-impaired woman in Corpus Christi, TX who needed a protective canine companion.
Family Felidae
Bartles Name: Don Chumahue Cachigordete Naricochino, Marqués de Casa Bardozos
("Bartles") (1987-2000)
Breed: Black and White Twisty Cat
Owners: Rick and Carol
Origin: Humane Society of Fairfax County, Va.
Bartles finally succumbed to liver failure after over 10 years of Phenobarbital medication.
wpe4.jpg (3176 bytes) Name: Katmandu (1974-1987)
Breed: Himalyan/Siamese
Owners: Rick and Carol
Origin: private owner in Pensacola, FL.
Katmandu has been with us from Pensacola to Corpus Christi to Jacksonville to Monterey to Sigonella to Arlington to Moffett Field and finally to Springfield, VA where he now rests.
wpe4.jpg (3176 bytes) Names: Concha y Toro (1969-1983)
Breed: American Shorthair/Tabby
Owners: Rick and Carol
Origin: private owner in Silver Spring, MD.
Concha y Toro are true siblings. Although neutered, Toro became a big, wandering tomcat and disappeared in Lafayette, Indiana. Concha stayed with us through several cross-country (and transatlantic) moves. She survived on her own in the woods near Orange Park FL for over a month while under the "care" of friends while we were travelling abroad in 1975.
